Classic day and evening tours by passenger boat
One of the most classic ways to travel on the Göta Canal is by passenger boat. Ever since the canal was inaugurated, various shipping companies have provided passenger traffic with boats that were designed to fit in the locks. Even today, M/S Juno and M/S Diana service the Stockholm-Gothenburg route and M/S Wilhelm Tham makes shorter cruises of a couple of days. If you are interested in a cruise, you can read more here.
More common today, however, is to go on a day or evening tour, and experience canal magic for a few hours. There are several shipping companies that offer day trips and the boats depart from several different ports along the entire length of the canal. What they all have in common is that you can both have lunch and coffee on board, all while you slowly glide along the canal and through the mighty locks.
Combine with cycling!
One of our favourites is combining your day trip with cycling part of the canal. You can either cycle in one direction and take one of the boats back, or vice versa. If you don't have your own bicycle, it's easy to rent one.
