All accommodation owned by the canal company was once subject to an accommodation protocol. In practice, this meant that the canal company covered any repair costs for those who lived in lock keepers’ houses, as long as they participated in the necessary manual labour. However, if damages were caused by anyone living in the house, the lock keeper had to bear the repair costs himself.
