Perfect cycling tour for families!

If you wish to cycle for one or two days along the Göta Canal, this is a classic cycling tour. It is very suitable for families with children or for those looking for lighter cycling to reserve some energy for other activities.

Start the day by picking up your rental bicycles at Kaffeteriet in Borensberg and then cycle eastwards. After just a couple of kilometres, you pass the old glassworks, which is now a hostel and summer café. Here, you also cycle through one of the canal sheep's summer pastures and can greet them if they are around.

Good stops along the way towards Berg are Brunneby Musteri & Farm Shop and Ljungs Västra. You also should not miss Ljungsbro with the Cloetta candy factory outlet and the popular activity park. This could very well be the best stop of the trip! If you have brought your own snacks, there are also several lovely rest stops along the way.

When you arrive in Berg, you have cycled section 5 of the Göta Canal route, which is just over 20 km.

Stay overnight in Berg or cycle into Linköping

In Berg, there are several accommodation options to choose from. You can stay in a hostel, a cottage, or a glamping tent. Alternatively, you can cycle on to Linköping and stay in one of the hotels there, which is about 15 km away.

Stay at least one day extra

The next day, we recommend exploring Linköping with everything it offers. Here, you will find children's favourites like LasseMaja’s Detective House and Old Linköping, as well as the Air Force Museum and the Östergötland County Museum. Both of the latter have great exhibitions aimed at children.

After a full day of city life, you can either cycle back or take the ship M/S Wasa Lejon from Berg to Borensberg. It departs at 10 am almost every day during summer, and it is possible to book a place for bicycles on board. A tip: you can leave your rental bicycles at the tourist information office in Berg, as long as you put in a request with your booking.

Travel sustainably by train

Another option if you would like to travel sustainably by train is to do the tour in reverse and start in Linköping. It is easy to get there by train from all over Sweden, and with Östgötatrafiken public transport, you can continue to the Berg locks, where you can pick up your rental bicycles. Cycle to Borensberg and make the same stops as described above, just in the opposite order.

If you would like to try a cosy glamping experience, stay overnight at Sörby Glamping and cycle on to Borensberg the next day. Alternatively, we recommend staying at the Glasbruket hostel or Göta Hotel. The next day, you can either cycle or take the M/S Wasa Lejon back to Berg. If you want to bring the bicycles with you back to Linköping to explore the city the following day, you can book space for them onboard. Otherwise, you can return them at Kaffeteriet before boarding.

Back in Berg and Linköping, we recommend staying an extra day to explore the city. You can do this by bicycle or using local public transport.
