Cycle the eastern part of the Göta Canal trail!
If you want to cycle the eastern part of the Göta Canal trail and are coming by car, Norsholm is a good starting point. From here, you can reach both Söderköping and Mem and take a boat across Lake Asplången!
If you’d like to start with a good lunch before setting off on your cycling adventure, you could do so at Kapten Bille's in Norsholm. Along the way, there are several nice rest areas for those who have brought their own provisions. It’s also possible to stop at Brådtoms Slusscafé and Jolla Café and Garden for refreshments. When you reach Lake Asplången, you can load your bicycles onto the bicycle boat and cross over. The trip only takes about 20 minutes, but remember to buy tickets in advance to ensure a spot.
Lovely Söderköping
After about 20 km, you will arrive in Söderköping, a real summer gem. In summer, the town is bustling with people, and there are plenty of cafés and restaurants in the canal harbour. If you have children with you, a stop at Sweden's largest ice cream café, Smultronstället, is a must. Otherwise, you might choose one of the other restaurants. One of them, Lock Hop and Barrel, even has its own microbrewery!
If you want to stay overnight in Söderköping, you could choose to just cycle out to Mem and back. Otherwise, we recommend staying at Kanalmagasinet in Mem for the night before heading back west.

Cycle back, or take the boat
The next day, you can choose to either cycle back the same way or take the boat. M/S Göta Lejon operates the Söderköping – Norsholm route, and you can easily book a spot for bicycles on board. This way, you get to experience the Göta Canal and the locks from both land and water. It's a unique experience!
The boat departs from the canal harbour in Söderköping and takes about 4 hours. You’ll be back in Norsholm in the afternoon, and you can decide whether to end your cycling tour here or continue towards Linköping and Berg.
