Lush greenery and fascinating history

Take the train to Töreboda and cycle eastwards. This tour blends open landscapes with lush greenery and exciting historical sites.

Travelling by train is the most sustainable way to reach your cycling holiday along the Göta Canal. Töreboda is easy to reach from all over Sweden, and bicycles can be rented from Café Visthuset or Sustainable Stella.

Once you've collected your bicycles, head eastwards and your first stop is the ferry Lina, Europe’s smallest ferry, which will take you to the other side of the canal. Along the way, there are several nice rest areas where you can stop for a snack, or you might prefer to stop at Jonsboda Café & Camping and enjoy their delicious treats.

Cosy overnight stay in Tåtorp

We suggest making your first stop for the night in Tåtorp. You can stay at the hostel, with the option to cook your own dinner in the shared kitchen. If you prefer a restaurant meal, there’s a place at Vassbacken, just a couple of kilometres before you reach Tåtorp, so it’s not much of a detour if you would like to cycle there and back.

You’ve now completed section 2 of the Göta Canal trail and cycled 15.5 km. From here, you can either cycle back to Töreboda or continue to section 3, which is 57 km and leads to Forsvik and Karlsborg.

Around Lake Viken to Forsvik

The next day, continue around Lake Viken. Most of this route is on minor roads, but there aren't many places to stop for refreshments before you reach Forsvik, so we recommend packing a picnic from breakfast in Tåtorp. In Forsvik, you can have lunch at Forsviks Café and Restaurant and take a tour of Forsviks Bruk, a fascinating industrial heritage site. There's also an opportunity to shop at the lovely Canal Shop, "5 Knop," and the chance to buy a packed lunch from the self-service grocery, 24SJU.

From here, it’s not far to Karlsborg, where you'll arrive later in the afternoon. We recommend dining at one of the town's restaurants and staying comfortably at the Canal Hotel or Hotell Rödesund. You’ve completed section 3 of the Göta Canal trail – something worth celebrating!

Continue cycling, or take a different route back

Karlsborg is a good place to turn back towards Töreboda, but if you want to continue, you can take the boat M/Y Modig to the other side of Lake Vättern. From there, the Göta Canal trail continues towards the east coast.

If you prefer not to cycle the same way back, you can leave the red and white trail and cycle along the north side of Lake Viken. There are several different routes to choose from, but keep in mind they are busier than the roads included in the Göta Canal trail. For example, if you take road 202 from Karlsborg all the way back to Töreboda, it’s 35.5 km. Here too, it’s a good idea to pack something for the journey, as there may be few stops for food and drinks.

Back in Töreboda, we recommend spending a night at Pensionat Prästgården before you head home again.
