A cycling tour with many choices

Motala is a great starting point if you want to cycle on the eastern side of the Göta Canal trail. You can get here comfortably by both train and car, and if you don’t have your own bicycle, you can easily rent one.

It’s a good idea to start the first day with lunch at one of the restaurants in the harbour where the bicycle rental is located. If you’re eager to get started, you can do so and instead stop for lunch at Café Mallboden in G:a Motala Verkstad. You’ll follow the canal through Motala, passing the fascinating old industrial area closely linked to the canal's construction. If you want to know more about it, you can visit the Canal Exhibition "From Idea to Reality," located in one of the old dance pavilions in the workshop area.

Stop for spa treatments

About halfway to Borensberg, you’ll pass the entrance to Högby Spa. For those of you who would like a little extra luxury during your bicycle tour, you can check in here for a spa day in the afternoon before continuing. A great choice, if you ask us! If you do not want to cycle further, you can also stay overnight at the hotel here and continue on the next day.

Once in Borensberg, you can stay at the classic Göta Hotel or a bit further away at the Glasbruket Hostel. You can also rent glamping tents there. Dinner is best enjoyed on the veranda of the Göta Hotel, overlooking the canal, regardless of your choice of accommodation. If you plan to cycle further towards Berg, Sörby Glamping is also a good option for an overnight stay. In that case, we recommend making a stop at Camarda's Italian deli on the way to pick up a perfectly suited glamping dinner!

Cycle further or return – the choice is yours!

You’ve now completed section 4 of the Göta Canal trail, which is 18 km. The next day, you have several options to continue from Borensberg. You can either cycle back the same way or choose to deviate from the red and white trail and cycle south of Lake Boren back to Motala. This route is about 20 km and more heavily trafficked, so it's best for adults cycling. There might be a shortage of places to eat along the way, so a picnic from Camarda is also a great idea.

Take the boat part of the way

If you want to cycle further than this section, you can continue on section 5 of the Göta Canal trail towards Berg. This stretch is about 20 km and runs along the traffic-free towpath. If you choose this option, Berg is a good choice for the next overnight stay. You can then either turn back and cycle or take the M/S Wasa Lejon boat to Borensberg.
